Gotta love Tubby Dog! Right on 17th in Downtown Calgary, Tubby Dog is pretty much the greatest balls-out celebration of street/fast food I’ve been to. Opened by an art-school grad years ago with a love of junk food, the place has a pretty simple mandate of serving over-the-top hot dogs, along with a few other treats yam fries, giant pickles and beer.
The whole place is decked out as a shrine to fast food, with lots of really cool vintage stuff. See the box of Krusty-O’s?
A personal fave, the Sumo dog, topped with “Japanese” mayo, lots of wasabi, pickled ginger, sesame seeds and seaweed. Combined with a fat juicy dog, it’s unreal.
One thing Tubby Dog gets right is making the dog and the bun big enough to handle all the toppings. Lots of the dogs need a fork for help, but it’s much better to be able to two-hand it.
The A-bomb, with cheese, bacon and potato chips. Obscene.
And the best part is, they clear out the tables at night and do shows! Here’s my punk band Kleins96 playing last year, in what’s been the only really great Calgary show we’ve ever played.
